Sale 1265, Lot 795, Allen 12c 1851-57: Plate 3 Perforated, Used Multiples (Scott 36B)12c Black, Plate 3 (36B). Positions 3-4/13-14L3, block of four with double framelines at right (left stamps) and left (right stamps), intense shade and impression, three clear strikes of "Philadelphia Pa. Jun. 18" octagonal datestamp, some perfs at top blunted by scissors

FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USED BLOCK OF THE 12-CENT 1857 ISSUE FROM PLATE 3 (SCOTT 36B) -- THESE POSITIONS FROM THE THIRD AND FOURTH COLUMNS OF THE LEFT PANE SHOW THE REMARKABLE DOUBLE FRAMELINE AT ONE SIDE VARIETY.

Any used strip of Scott 36B is scarce, and used blocks are rare. This block contains four examples of the double frameline at one side variety, which comes only from the 20 positions in columns 3 and 4 of the left pane, where extra framelines were engraved stamp by stamp between the two vertical columns (a similar ruled line was engraved between columns 7 and 8).

Scott value $3,250.00 as an ordinary used block

Sale 1265, Lot 796, Allen 12c 1851-57: Plate 3 Perforated, Used Multiples (Scott 36B)12c Black, Plate 3 (36B). Positions 72-77/82-88/92-98R3, horizontal block of 20 from the right pane, Positions 92R, 93R and 98R double transfers, Position 95R vertical line through Rosette at lower left, penstroke cancels, deep shade, part of top trimmed, three stamps at right reattached and some other perfs reinforced, minor faults

OVERALL FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTRAORDINARY PHILATELIC ARTIFACT -- THE LARGEST RECORDED USED MULTIPLE FROM THE 12-CENT PLATE 3. USED MULTIPLES LARGER THAN A PAIR ARE EXTREMELY SCARCE AND BLOCKS ARE VERY RARE.

Unlike 12c Plate 1, Plate 3 was entered by rocking the transfer roll from the bottom to the top. For this reason, there are major double transfers in the bottom row. This block, the largest recorded used multiple, contains three of the significant double transfers and the Scott-listed line through Rosette variety. Any used strip of Scott 36B is scarce, and used blocks are rare.

Ex Stark. Scott value $12,150.00 as three used blocks and four pairs
