Position 55L1, cancelled by dark blue grid cancel with matching "New Bedford Ms. Aug 25" (1851) circular datestamp on 1851 docketed blue folded cover to San Francisco, stamp is faulty but overall Fine appearing cover, double 6c rate to the West Coast, recorded by Allen as the earliest domestic use of the 12c 1851, signed Ashbrook on back with his opinion that it is genuine

Position 24R1, margins mostly clear, sharp early impression and grayish shade, bold strike of New York City 13-bar square grid in black and part of red numeral at lower left, minor corner creases, Fine appearance, the latest recorded use of the New York City 13-bar square grid is July 20, 1851 (according to Allen -- see Sale 1262, lot 86), so this stamp represents the "earliest indicated use" (no examples dated earlier than August 1851 are recorded), illustrated in 1851 Sesquicentennial book (p. 192),
