Sale Date — Tuesday-Friday, 17-20 May, 2022
Category — 6c-12c 1869 Pictorial Issue (Scott 115-117)

VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE RARE AND DESIRABLE RUNNING CHICKEN FANCY CANCELLATION OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 6-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE WITH THIS ICONIC CANCEL.
This is the only known example of the Waterbury Running Chicken fancy cancel on the 6c 1869 Pictorial. The stamp was discovered in England and presumably originated on a cover addressed to there (at the 6c rate). It was first sold in a George Alevizos sale decades ago.
Ex Haub and from our 1994 Rarities sale. P.F. certificate no. 42517 no longer accompanies.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB JUMBO-MARGINED AND CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE WITH AN ATTRACTIVE CANCEL.
With 1986, 2001 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ $1,850.00). Only two grade higher (at 98) and two others share this grade. We have sold both of the other 95Js and neither has a cancel as attractive as offered here.

FINE APPEARANCE AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE WITH A GREEN FANCY CANCEL.
Green cancellations are a favorite of Mr. Gorham and they are well represented on many classic issues in his collection. Most are scarce to rare, but a green cancel on the 10c 1869 Pictorial is extremely rare. The fact that this is a fancy cancel depicting a shield adds to its desirability. Power Search does not contain another Scott 116 cancelled in green -- fancy or otherwise.
With 2020 P.F. certificate. Scott assigns a $5,000.00 premium for a green cancel.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A HUGE EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE CANCELLED IN RED. THIS ISSUE IS RARELY FOUND WITH SUCH ENORMOUS MARGINS.
Ex Kirke. With 1985, 2001 and 2013 P.F. certificates. 2011 P.S.E. certificate graded XF 90 Jumbo no longer accompanies.
