Position 4R"S", showing inner line recut at right, extra wide margin at right clearly shows the variety, well-struck blue "1" in circle handstamp, Very Fine and rare variety, this is reportedly the only position on any of the 18 Type III plates to show a right inner line recut, Chase called this the "Q recut" and the "S" plate designation is one of the letters he used in lieu of plate numbers that he had not figured out (the so-called "alphabet plates"), ex Wagshal, with 2012 P.F. certificate

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A REMARKABLE STAMP AND ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED USED EXAMPLES OF THIS RARE PERFORATION ERROR. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE SHOWING THE IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER.

The only other used example of Scott 26b we record is on cover, without imprint or plate no. There is also a horizontal unused pair from the Wagshal collection (sale 996, lot 3223)

Ex Piller, Hulme and Bakwin. With 1974 and 2009 P.F. certificates. Unpriced as used in Scott. Scott value as unused pair is $14,000.00
