FRESH AND FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 5-CENT 1908 VERTICAL COIL.

According to Johl, these first government coils were an experiment, and collectors and dealers were generally unaware of their existence. Regular sheets of 400 were printed and then perforated in only one direction. They were then cut into strips of 20. The strips were then hand pasted together to form rolls. As such, they are almost always strongly centered to one side.

With 2007 P.F. and 2014 P.S.A.G. certificates (70 ogPH)

Sale 1262, Lot 898, 1902-08 Issue, Louisiana Purchase Issue1c Green, Louisiana Purchase, Small Die Proof on Wove (323P1). Larger margins than the usual Roosevelt proof, probably because this was created later, small stain spot at bottom right, appears Very Fine and rare, the 1904 Louisiana Purchase issue was not yet released when the Roosevelt presentation albums were prepared in 1903, and so was not included in the initial album production, several years after the albums were produced, ten were updated with stamp issues that came after 1903, therefore, Roosevelt proofs of post-1903 issues are more than eight times rarer than proofs of the earlier issues

Sale 1262, Lot 901, 1902-08 Issue, Louisiana Purchase Issue1c-3c Louisiana Purchase, "ULTRAMAR" Ovpt. (323S-325S). Original gum, old certificates call the 1c "sweated" and the 2c-3c "part o.g." but the gum is essentially full on all three, clear overprints, 1c small corner crease and 2c tiny tear, appear Fine, very rare, the Portuguese Ministry for the Colonies applied the "Ultramar" overprint, meaning "overseas", upon receipt of the stamps from U.P.U. headquarters in Berne, between 1900 and 1910 the stamps were distributed to the various colonies with this overprint, with a few exceptions this was replaced with "Colonias" in 1911, these are the first Louisiana Purchase stamps listed in Power Search, with 1983 P.F. certificates

1c-3c Louisiana Purchase, Plate Blocks. Top or bottom plate blocks of ten, with ten 1c, eleven 2c, and four 3c, all with original gum, several were previously described by an auction house as never-hinged, however some of those are lightly hinged (sometimes only in the ungummed selvage) or have rejoined perfs that caused tiny disturbance, which knocks them out of the Mint N.H. category, using the most conservative method of cataloguing (as hinged plate blocks of six), the Scott value still exceeds $12,000.00
