Sale Date — Thursday, 20 October, 2022
Category — 1887-1894 Plimpton Issue (Scott U298-U323)
EXTREMELY FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE MINT ENTIRE OF THE DIE 83 ONE-CENT BLUE ON ORIENTAL BUFF. ONLY THREE ARE RECORDED FOR THIS WATERMARK TYPE.
The UPSS catalogue states three mint entires are reported for No. 891 and one for No. 892 (watermark 8). We have also offered a cut square of No. 891 with two separate impressions (Sale 1037, lot 2367). These two listings and the "Specimen" ovpt. No. 890 (an example is offered in the following lot) represent the complete listings under the umbrella of the rare Scott U298.
EXTREMELY FINE. THIS MINT ENTIRE OF THE DIE 83 ONE-CENT BLUE ON ORIENTAL BUFF IN SIZE SEVEN, WATERMARK 6, IS KNOWN ONLY AS A "SPECIMEN".
The UPSS catalogue lists three different size, knife and watermark types under the umbrella of the rare Scott U298. This combination is known only with "Specimen" overprint.
Scott value for No. U298 is $12,000.00.
EXTREMELY FINE AND VERY RARE MINT ENTIRE OF THE DIE 83 ONE-CENT BLUE ON BLUE ISSUE, SCOTT U299.
The UPSS catalogue states that five or fewer entires "may" exist of No. 893, but this is significantly higher than all reported numbers we have heard before, or census data recorded by Porter Venn. This is the first entire we have offered since our 2007 sale of the "Saddleback" collection. The example in that sale, ex Lilly and from our 1974 Rarities sale, was described as unique (it is not the same entire offered here). In addition, Venn recorded two full corners, two cut squares and an unused entire with "Specimen" overprint, which is unique.
VERY FINE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED ENTIRES OF THE DIE 87 2-CENT GREEN ON BLUE ISSUE -- BOTH USED. A GREAT RARITY OF POSTAL STATIONERY COLLECTING.
The UPSS catalogue reports no unused entires and two used entires. Porter Venn recorded two unused cut squares -- one recently sold in our "Great Point" collection (Sale 1256, lot 2273) and the other ex Floyd, "Saddleback" and "Scarsdale". There are also two used cut squares recorded.
Ex White with his backstamp. With 2004 P.F. certificate
