Size 7, knife 30u, watermark 2, unused, intense shade and sharp impression characteristic of the Centennial Special Printing

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF SIX RECORDED ENTIRES OF THE 2-CENT BROWN ON ORANGE CENTENNIAL SPECIAL PRINTING, AND ONE OF THREE RECORDED OF UPSS NO. 299. A GREAT RARITY IN THE FIELD OF POSTAL STATIONERY COLLECTING.

Reproductions of the Plimpton Manufacturing Company stamped envelope issues were specially made for display at the 1876 Centennial Exposition. They were likely made from new dies with extreme care and show fine impressions and clearer ink than the regular issues. None are known used. The 2c Die 48 was also used on regular issues but the impressions from this die on Orange paper are exclusively Centennial Special Printings. Only three full entires are recorded of No. 299 and six total among the three UPSS numbers under the umbrella of Scott U125.

Sale 1267, Lot 2588, 1874-1886 Plimpton and 1876 Centennial Special Printings (Scott U125-U215)

2c Brown on Cream, Die 49, Cut Square (U130; UPSS 305). Unused, 35 x 39mm, deep rich color on fresh paper

VERY FINE. THE 2-CENT DIE 49 BROWN ON CREAM PLIMPTON ISSUE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST RARITIES OF POSTAL STATIONERY COLLECTING. TWO CUT SQUARES AND ZERO ENTIRES ARE RECORDED.

The UPSS Catalog states that two cut squares are recorded and no entires are known in any condition. When we last sold this example we mentioned three unduplicated examples sold in our sales, but that was in error. We have sold only two -- the ex "Scarsdale" example offered here and the example from our 2007 sale of the "Saddleback" collection. An example from our 1992 Rarities sale was misidentified.

Ex Curie (1939 Harmer Rooke sale) and "Scarsdale". Singed Bartels. With 2000 P.F. certificate

EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 2-CENT DIE 48 VERMILION ON MANILA WRAPPER. THIS IS THE FINEST CONDITION EXAMPLE WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED.

The UPSS Catalog states there may be as many as ten unused examples known, with "some in poor condition", though that number seems high to us. We have encountered only two others -- from our "Saddleback" sale (with creases) and our "Scarsdale" sale (with pinhole and creases). The latter wrapper was owned by Porter Venn until he upgraded to this choice example.

According to Envelope World (Nov.-Dec. 1957, p. 22), this entire was discovered in 1940 in a dealer's shoe box of 5c covers by John Meurer. Until that point it was not believed to exist as an entire. It passed into the Barkhausen collection and was the only item pictured on the front of the 1955 sale catalogue of the collection. Size 25, knife 122, watermark 2, unused, return request printed at left, vivid color and exceptionally bold embossing

EXTREMELY FINE. A CHOICE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1876 90-CENT CARMINE ON CREAM ENTIRE CENTENNIAL SPECIAL PRINTING -- PARTICUARLY ELUSIVE IN THE SIZE 25 ENVELOPE.

The regular issue Die 70 indicia has a colorless dot below the Perry bust. The Centennial Special Printing entires were embossed with a new die and lack the dot. They were very carefully produced and the intense shades and extremely detailed impressions are hallmarks of the Special Printings. This can be seen well by comparing this entire with the normal issue entire offered in the previous lot. The UPSS Catalog states that the size 25 Centennial Special Printings are particularly rare in comparison to the other sizes (Nos. 596, 603a, 609, 618 and 636 offered here).

Size 25, knife 123, watermark 6, unused, brilliant color on intensely watermarked paper which shows very clearly, Extremely Fine, this size 25 entire of the 90c Carmine on Blue issue is far rarer than the size 13 (No. 638), which is the basis of the Scott listing for U215, the UPSS Catalog records only three entires for No. 639, the only other example listed in Power Search was from our 1974 Rarities sale (this may be the same one), UPSS value
