Jul. 27" (1860) circular datestamp on back, red crayon "42/2" credit--carried on the Vanderbilt Line Vanderbilt, departing New York July 28, 1860, and arriving Southampton August 7--red "London Paid C AU 7 60" datestamp, manuscript "2" British Colonial credit, Hong Kong receiving backstamp (Sep. 1860), slight bleed of manuscript, faint gum toning, 24c stamps slightly creased and lefthand stamp has nick at bottom right

VERY FINE COVER AND EXTREMELY RARE MULTIPLE OF 24-CENT 1860 ISSUE TO PAY THE 84-CENT RATE TO HONG KONG BY BRITISH MAIL VIA MARSEILLES FOR A LETTER WEIGHING BETWEEN ONE-HALF AND THREE-QUARTERS OF AN OUNCE.

This cover was sent by British Mail via Marseilles, following the Peninsular & Oriental Line route via Alexandria, Suez and Galle.

Note by Stanley B. Ashbrook on back: "Over 1/2 oz but not over 3/4 oz, 2 x 39 + 6 = 84c. Rare Rate."

Used with 5c Brown, Type II (30A) and 10c Green, Type V (35), 5c straight edge, tied by two light strikes of Boston large "Paid" grid cancel on cover to John G. Ward, care of Olyphant & Co., Hong Kong, China, sender's directive "Via Marseilles"--no U.S. post office datestamps but red "London Paid AE NO 26 60" datestamp points to Cunarder Europa departure from Boston on November 14, 1860, arriving in Queenstown November 25--if carried by British Packet the credit should have been 40c, but red crayon "24" applied at Boston, red "1d" British Colonial credit handstamp, no backstamps but a small hole cut from backflap which might have been the Hong Kong receiving datestamp, docketed with January 3, 1861 reply date, scuffed in area of credit marking which appears to be strengthened, 5c and 30c with small faults, otherwise Very Fine, a beautiful three-color 1857-60 Issue franking for 45c rate to Hong Kong, with 1986 P.F. certificate
