Jul. 25" circular datestamp on folded printed 7-page announcement for Castleton Medical College dated 1857 to Johnson Vt., manuscript "Recd. July 26th 1857 Prof. Woodard", refolded at right, some soiling and erosion spots, stamp with diagonal crease, otherwise Fine, this is the earliest documented use of Scott 20, there is a circular known dated two days earlier but it does not have a postmark so its date of use cannot be confirmed

Bright color, corner torn at top left probably prior to use, tied by light strike of "Vicksburg Miss. ? 20" circular datestamp on green overall "Dew Drop and Roebuck Vicksburg & Greenwood Mail Packets" illustrated advertising cover to Carroll Hoy in New Orleans, also with clear strike of "Charmer & Dewdrop" oval handstamp, likely used between Nov. 1860 and Apr. 1861 (when Parisot and Dent owned the Dew Drop), usual small filing holes as seen in this correspondence, Very Fine, very rare, this is reported to be the only recorded example of a name-of-boat marking on a name-of-boat envelope from this time period, ex Dr. Chase and Warm, illustrated in Klein and Milgram

Sale 1262, Lot 131, 1857-60 Issue10c Green, Ty. II, III (32, 33). Three singles, two Type III, each with left sheet selvage, tied by bold "Sweetland Cal. Apr. 2" (1859) circular datestamps on cover to London, England, red "19" credit handstamp, red "London Paid MY 10, 1859" circular datestamp, Very Fine, a scarce use overpaying by 1c the 29c transatlantic rate from the West Coast, the Sweetland cancel predates the earliest recorded date in Williams by two years, this was carried by private express via Grass Valley to Marysville, where it went by river steamer to Sacramento and then on to San Francisco, it was then carried on the Butterfield route, departing San Francisco Apr. 4 and arriving Tipton Mo. Apr. 25, then placed on the railroad to St. Louis and on to New York where carried on the Cunarder Europa, which departed New York Apr. 27 and arrived Liverpool May 9, ex Haas and "Sevenoaks"

New York" oval backstamp, magenta manuscript "“1.42" credit, manuscript "4" British Colonial credit, red London Paid datestamp (Jun. 25), Hong Kong (Aug. 17) backstamp, stamps with few small flaws including block affected by horizontal file fold, missing an additional stamp at upper left, still Very Fine and extremely unusual franking with $1.60 in postage, signed Ashbrook and illustrated in the Ashbrook file archives at The Philatelic Foundation's website, with 1976 P.F. certificate

March 6" (1861) manuscript postmark on buff cover to Tillis, Switzerland, red manuscript "12" credit, red boxed "Aachen Franco" datestamp also ties 5c, red manuscript "fr2" crossed out and re-rated "6", various backstamps, 5c slightly affected from placement near edge of cover, some slight wear, Very Fine, the use of the European term "franco" by the postmaster in Alma, Wisconsin, strongly suggests he was a German or Swiss German immigrant
