VERY FINE APPEARING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE Ia.
With 2002 P.F. certificate

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.
Due to the narrow vertical spacing on this plate, stamps are most typically found with the perforations impinging on a portion of the design. The example offered here is centered so that the type characteristics are clearly visible.
Ex Saadi. With 1982, 1989 P.F. and 2004 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $9,750.00). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by only eight others.

EXTREMELY FINE. A LOVELY USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT BLUE TYPE III FROM PLATE 4.
Due to the narrow vertical spacing on this plate, stamps are most typically found with the perforations impinging on some portion of the design. The example offered here is centered so that the type characteristics are clearly visible.
With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90; SMQ $4,750.00)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A PHENOMENAL USED EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE IIIa, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.
With 1983 P.F. and 2005 and 2021 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $5,550.00). Only two grade higher (both 95J).

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THE 1857 PERFORATED 3-CENT TYPE I IS RARELY FOUND IN CENTERED ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.
This stamp is extremely difficult to obtain with superior margins and centering, due to the narrow spacing on the plate, which was laid out prior to the introduction of perforations in 1857. Finding such an example in unused condition with original gum adds considerably to the difficulty. Even superb copies will show perforations impinging on at least one frameline.
Ex Curtis. 1989 P.F. certificate no longer accompanies. With 2014 P.F. certificate (VF-XF 85)

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT BRICK RED WITH OUTSTANDING COLOR, CENTERING AND A NEAT SAN FRANCISCO CANCELLATION.
Ex Curtis where we erroneously noted a tiny perf tear. 1994 P.F. certificate no longer accompanies. With 1993 and 2017 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ $5,100.00). Only six grade higher (all at 95).

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT RED BROWN, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED AND IT IS SHARED BY ONLY ONE OTHER. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ISSUES TO OBTAIN WITH SUCH WIDE MARGINS AND IN SUCH PRISTINE CONDITION.
Due to the narrow spacing between stamps on the 5c Plate 1, the perforations often touch or go into the outer portion of the design on one or more sides. The example offered here, with perfect centering and deep rich color, is a true condition rarity.
With 1983 P.F. and 2004 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98; SMQ $27,500.00). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by only one other. This statistic has not changed since 2010.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT INDIAN RED. A DIFFICULT STAMP TO FIND IN SUCH CHOICE CONDITION.
The deepest shade of Red Brown from the 1858 printing is known as Indian Red. It is found in a short spectrum of color, ranging from a dark purplish shade to a vivid "glowing" orange shade. To be classified as Indian Red, the stamp's impression must be strong throughout, especially in the area of the oval surrounding Jefferson's head. If a stamp possesses anything less than a very deep impression with the characteristic intense red shade, it will fall short of Indian Red, Scott 28A (and that is why Scott 28b was created as "second place").
With 2004 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90; SMQ $8,000.00). Only one grades higher (at 95) and five others share this desirable grade.

VERY FINE AND ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT INDIAN RED SHADE.
With 1998 and 2014 P.F. certificates

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 5-CENT TYPE I BROWN, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.
Ex Merlin. With 1985 P.F., 2008 and 2015 P.S.E. certificates identifying the top left cancel as ultramarine (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $4,500.00 for normal color). Only two grade higher (at 98).

EXTREMELY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1860 5-CENT ORANGE BROWN TYPE II.
With 2004 P.F. certificate (OGph, XF 90; SMQ $3,300.00). Only three grade higher (two at 95, one at 95J)

EXTREMELY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1860 5-CENT ORANGE BROWN TYPE II.
With 1991 and 2007 P.F. certificates (XF 90), by way of comparison, only three have graded higher in the P.S.E. Population Report

EXTREMELY FINE GEM USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 5-CENT TYPE II, SCOTT 30A
With 2014 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $2,800.00). Only three grade higher -- one each at 95J (we have never offered it), 98 (ex Bowman, realized $14,500) and 100 (ex "Natalee Grace", realized $18,000). We have offered only one other at this grade since 2012.
