Sale 1235, Lot 1015, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-39)1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Position 91L4, with bottom sheet selvage, unused (no gum), type characteristics fully visible in selvage, deep rich color and completely sound

VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia PERFORATED WITH FULL BOTTOM SELVAGE.

Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4. Although Plate 4 was designed with sufficient space to accommodate perforations, the height of the top row and bottom row positions resulted in the perforations often cutting into the design at either top or bottom. For this reason, stamps from the bottom row of Plate 4 with perforations clear of the design are especially desirable, since the characteristics of the type are complete (Type Ia) or nearly complete (Type Ic) at bottom. The stamp offered here is highly desirable since it shows all the type characteristics in the selvage.

With 1977 P.F. and 2014 P.S.E. certificates as a vertical pair with Type III at top.

Sale 1235, Lot 1016, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-39)1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Plate 4, original gum, minor h.r. at top, showing wide breaks in lines at top and bottom, beautiful shade and detailed impression

VERY FINE AND RARE SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III.

This stamp was printed from Plate 4, which originally produced imperforate stamps and was used only briefly after the introduction of perforations in 1857 before being discontinued. Sound, original-gum stamps from Plate 4 are rare.

Sale 1235, Lot 1026, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-39)5c Brown, Ty. II (30A). With right part imprint selvage, original gum, lightly hinged, well-centered with deep rich color

EXTREMELY FINE. A DESIRABLE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT TYPE II BROWN 1860 ISSUE IN FRESH CONDITION WITH A PART-IMPRINT SHEET MARGIN.

Unlike its Orange Brown counterpart (Scott 30), the 5c Type II in Brown was not on hand in post offices when the 1861 demonetization order took effect. Therefore, original-gum examples of Scott 30A are far scarcer than Scott 30. The narrow spacing between subjects on the plate, as well as Toppan Carpenter's imprecise perforating, leaves collectors with very few well-centered original-gum examples.

1997 P.F. certificate for right imprint and plate number strip of three no longer accompanies

Sale 1235, Lot 1027, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-39)10c Green, Ty. I (31). Original gum, lightly hinged, deep rich color, attractive centering and margins on bright paper

FRESH AND FINE. A RARE SOUND LIGHTLY HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 10-CENT TYPE I.

The scarcer types of the perforated 10c 1857 Issue are rarely found with original gum, and many have perfs cutting into the design on at least one side. The example offered here, clearly showing the characteristics of the type and with fresh color and gum, is highly desirable.

P.F. certificate no. 392293 stating "light soiling at bottom right" no longer accompanies, but the soiling in any event is no longer evident. With clear 2010 P.S.E. certificate
