Boyd's Dispatch Unadopted Essays, ca. 1884. Four items: two artist's pen-ink-and-wash essays, one with manuscript prices for printing and pencil notation on back "Submitted by Baldwin & Gleason, 55 Cedar St. City" -- according to album write-up, this firm was located at this address from 1882 to 1884, which is just at the end of Boyd's letter-carrying business -- accompanied by a third hand-drawn essay for "Boyd's City Despatch" and a printer's proof of the same design, which was used as a logo for delivery lists after Boyd's stopped carrying mail, Very Fine, each hand-executed essay is unique, ex Schwartz

Boyd's Dispatch, New York N.Y., (unstated value) Black on Orange Red (20L43A). Well-centered, brilliant color with bright orange hue and smooth coated surface, tied by "Paid" in circle cancel, purple "Boyd's City Dispatch, 1 Park Place, Jul. 13 (1878)" oval datestamp on embossed corner card cover to local street address, Extremely Fine, the Orange Red is the rarest of the regularly-issued Mercury series and was used briefly in July and early August 1878 -- see John D. Bowman's article in The Penny Post, Apr. 1995 (this is one of the three covers he records) -- ex Colonel Green and Golden, with 1999 P.F. certificate
