EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE IN THE DESIRABLE RED ORANGE SHADE.
With 2015 P.F. certificate (XF 90)

THE UNIQUE “ASHBROOK RECONSTRUCTION”--A BLOCK OF SIX DIVIDED INTO TWO VERTICAL STRIPS AND REJOINED TO FORM ONE EXTREMELY FINE AND INCOMPARABLE SHOWPIECE.
The left strip was owned by Stanley B. Ashbrook. In 1918, while viewing the Judge Robert S. Emerson collection, he realized that a similar strip owned by the judge had once adjoined his own. The reconstructed block is illustrated in the Brookman book (Volume 1, page 43).
Vertical 5c 1847 strips are very rare, on or off cover. It is reported that only one other 5c multiple exists with both double transfers--a pair from Positions 80 and 90R--but the pair is cut into at bottom and right.
Ex Emerson, Ashbrook, Newbury, Dr. Morris, Mirsky and Middendorf. With 1980 Freidl and 1983 P.F. certificates. 1996 Calvet M. Hahn analysis accompanies.
