Top right corner margin complete pane of 56, unused (no gum), showing the substituted cliche in position 30, with a few other prominent subtypes and vertical hairline fracture of plate extending from position 28 to 42, bold color, strengthened along edges which also mend some marginal tears, few trivial toned spots and mild creasing, still Very Fine, an exceptional rarity of the Escuditos Surcharged issue and one of the most important items to acquire, this complete pane was unknown to collectors prior to its first offering in 2009, ex Sciarra, signed Bolaffi, with 2008 Rocha certificate, catalogued simply as singles, Scott $2,128.00

VERY FINE. A TRULY REMARKABLE ORIGINAL GUM COMPLETE PANE OF 56 OF THE 20-CENTESIMOS SURCHARGE IN THE UNISSUED BRICK RED SHADE SHOWING THE DOUBLE SURCHARGE AND MISSING SURCHARGE ERRORS. THIS IS THE ONLY KNOWN COMPLETE PANE AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS OF THE SURCHARGED ESCUDITOS ISSUE IN EXISTENCE.

Prior to it's discovery and sale in 2009, this item was completely unknown to Uruguayan experts and collectors of the past such as Hoffmann & Lee. Ex Sciarra. Signed Bolaffi. Two page handwritten letter dated June 13, 1866 and sent from the Director of Posts for Uruguay, Alejandro Gutierrez, to the Belgian Consulate in Montevideo, letter announcing the 1866 Large Numeral issue which was due to replace the 1866 Provisional surcharge issue, set of each of the issued stamps, the surcharged issue tied by Montevideo Jun. 13, 1866 oval datestamps and the Numeral issue tied by the barred "A" cancel which was introduced at the same time, stamps with minor toning

VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE OFFICIAL POSTAL ANNOUNCEMENT BETWEEN URUGUAY AND BELGIUM FOR THE CHANGE OF ISSUED STAMPS. THIS DOCUMENT WAS ONLY SENT TO COUNTRIES WITH WHICH URUGUAY HAD POSTAL RELATIONS AND THE ONLY KNOWN SURVIVING DOCUMENT FOR THESE ISSUES.

Exceptional group of 53 items neatly mounted on four exhibit pages (two double pages), both unused and "used", with examples of the 1864 6c, 8c, and 12c, plus each value of the 1866 Surcharged Issue (5c on 12c thru 20c on 6c), clearly identifying the different Hoffmann types, with singles, pairs, blocks and even a complete tete-beche pane of 64 of the 8c Green, the 1866 Surcharged issue originate from the Ciardi archives are some of the hardest to identify as Sperati often used genuine underlying stamps with forged overprints, often errors, to enhance value of the stamps
