VERY FINE AND RARE "FIRE LETTER" OFFICIAL MAIL.

"Fire letters" were essentially express mail carried on horseback by special fast couriers and used only for official mail.

(149) tied on reverse by Urga Oct. 24 circular datestamps with Lunar Year "Jen Tzu" crossed out and "Yi" inserted to represent Republic Year "One", on cover to Kalgan, China, additional postmark on front, Kalgan arrival backstamp (Nov. 6) without year designation as usual, the Urga postmark with Year One is unrecorded, and it has always been assumed that throughout 1912, all Chinese post offices in Mongolia had the year omitted, and didn't begin to include any Republic Year designation until Year Two in 1913
