Sale 1246, Lot 3496, Japan thru MexicoKOREA, 1895, 5p Yellow Green, First Printing (6a). Seven, along with 1900 3ch Orange Red, Perf 10 (21e), all tied by Taegu May 7, 1901 postmarks on illustrated cover to Santa Ana, California, Korean "Fusan Coree" foreign-mail postmark (May 9) and Japanese Post Office "Fusan" bisected-circle in red and partial Yokohama transits, Santa Ana arrival postmark of June 6, a few of the 5p stamps with minor pre-affixing wrinkles

FINE. AN EXTRAORDINARILY RARE COVER WITH THE 1895 5-POON FIRST PRINTING. PROBABLY THE ONLY FOREIGN-MAIL COVER, AND LIKELY THE LARGEST MULTIPLE-FRANKING.

Korea joined the U.P.U. on January 1, 1900. From that point on, Korean stamps were valid on foreign mail. One the same date, the currency changed from Poons to Chon and Won, and earlier stamps denominated in Poons were accepted at the rate of 5 poon = 1 chon. The remaining supply were surcharged 1 chon (Scott 15B). The unsucharged Poon stamps continued to be accepted at the converted rate. The seven 5 poon stamps were treated as 7 chon, plus the 3 chon stamp, correctly paid the 10-chon foreign mail rate.

Only a tiny number of covers with the 5-poon First Printing have survived.

Sale 1246, Lot 3497, Japan thru MexicoKOREA, 1900, 2c Blue, 3ch Orange Red, Perf 10 (20, 21e). Pair of each tied on reverse by Chemulpo Coree Jan. 27, 1900 foreign-mail circular datestamps on cover to Annaberg, Germany, sent via Shanghai with French Post Office "Shang-Hai" transit (Feb. 3), Annaberg arrival backstamp (Mar. 10) also ties the 3ch stamp, the stamps were damaged upon opening, but have been nearly restored, cover with a few minor pinholes not affecting stamps or markings, Fine appearance, despite its faults, this is a highly important and rare cover for several reasons: it is believed to be the earliest known U.P.U.-period foreign mail cover from Korea and thereby the earliest known foreign mail cover franked solely with Korean stamps; the earliest known cover franked at a postage rate of the newly introduced currency (on Jan. 1, 1900 Korea changed from Poons to Chons & Wons); the earliest known example of the new foreign mail postmark type; the earliest known cover from Korea routed through the French post office in Shanghai; and possibly the only extant first-month example of any Plum Blossom stamps
