Sale 1247, Lot 785, HawaiiHAWAII, 1857, 5c on 13c Dark Red (7). Type I (Clark) numeral, full margins to barely touching the frameline at bottom right, lightly-struck San Francisco circular datestamp cancel leaves the full design visible

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE SOUND USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT ON 13-CENT PROVISIONAL SURCHARGE.

The 5c provisional surcharge was necessary due to a shortage of 5c stamps just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson. Most were made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark, around the start of 1857. New supplies of the 5c stamp (Scott No. 8) were received at the end of June 1857.

This issue is very rare as a sound used stamp off-cover. A review using Power Search reveals that the last sound off-cover examples we offered were in our 2011 sale of the Golden collection. Every other example we have offered in the last ten years has had a fault.

Sale 1247, Lot 788, HawaiiHAWAII, 1859, 1c Light Blue, Bluish White (12). Plate 2-A, Type III (Westerberg Position 1), huge even margins all around, neat strike of red 9-bar square grid cancel of Honolulu, brilliant color, fresh in every respect

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 ONE-CENT BLUE HAWAIIAN NUMERAL ISSUE -- EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST EXTANT.

Examples of the 1c Blue Numeral with handstamped cancellations are considerably rarer and more desirable than pen-cancelled copies. When adding the factors of margin width and sound condition, the rarity of this example increases dramatically. This is easily one of the finest known.

Sale 1247, Lot 789, HawaiiHAWAII, 1859, 2c Light Blue, Bluish White (13). Plate 3-A, Type II (Westerberg Position 2), large margins to clear, rich color nicely complemented by red "Honolulu Hawaiian-Island Dec. 22" circular datestamp -- struck to frame the stamp, faint corner crease, we also mentioned a few tiny surface scuffs in our Sale 1040, which are all but invisible

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 2-CENT BLUE HAWAIIAN NUMERAL ISSUE CANCELLED BY THE RED HONOLULU DATESTAMP.

Examples of the 2c Blue Numeral with handstamped cancellations are considerably more desirable than pen-cancelled copies.

FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE SOUND USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1863 2-CENT NUMERAL FROM THE FIFTH SETTING IN DARK BLUE, ON BLUISH WOVE PAPER.

The 2c Dark Blue on Bluish paper (Scott 17) was printed after Scott 18 and before Scott 20. It is one of the rarest of all Numeral Issues in either unused or used condition, and almost all known examples have small faults. This attractive sound example is a rare exception to the normal condition.

Sale 1247, Lot 792, HawaiiHAWAII, 1864, 1c Black (19). Plate 6-A, Type VIII (Westerberg Position 8), full even margins all around, lightened manuscript cancel, faint toning

VERY FINE APPEARING AND EXTREMELY RARE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1864 ONE-CENT BLACK NUMERAL ISSUE ON WHITE WOVE.

A description in Shreve's Pietsch sale stated only twelve used copies of this issue are known, presumably based on Albert Chang's records. We have offered only two others since our 1995 Honolulu Advertiser sale and Power Search does not contain a single sound example. This example, with four margins and minor toning, is very desirable.
