EXTREMELY FINE SET OF ATLANTA TRIAL COLOR PROOFS FOR THE 1871 CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE ISSUE, WITH THE 5-CENT 1875 AMERICAN BANK NOTE ISSUE.

The Atlanta trial color plate proofs on card were prepared for display at the 1881 International Cotton Exposition in Atlanta. Only one sheet of 50 in each color was printed. The sheets were somehow acquired by James A. Petrie of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, at the close of the exposition (along with the 1869 invert card proof sheets). Petrie claimed that he rescued the proofs just before they were to be burned. They were cut up into one set of blocks of eight, two sets of blocks of four, pairs and singles. These are often offered either by denomination or in other smaller groupings. It is difficult to assemble the complete set. This Extremely Fine set is one of the choicest we have encountered

Complete set of eleven on original card backing from a Roosevelt presentation album, also including an original envelope labeled "United States Postage Stamps, Issue 1890" -- which was used to distribute the P4 card plate proofs but still makes a nice collateral item for this small die proof set, brilliant colors, Extremely Fine, only approximately 85 albums were produced, with 2019 P.S.E. certificates, most of which are graded Gem 100 (unpriced in SMQ), the certificate for the 1c states "remounted on a new card backing" -- it is precisely the same card as all the other Roosevelt proofs so we are at a loss how they know this

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED COMPLETE SET OF 1902 ISSUE LARGE DIE PROOFS, WHICH HAD BEEN IN THE FAMILY OF STAMP DIVISION SUPERINTENDANT JAMES H. REEVE FROM 1902 TO 2018, WHEN THIS SET FIRST REACHED THE MARKET. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY FOUR OR FIVE KNOWN SETS. A HISTORIC RARITY OF EARLY BUREAU AND ESSAY-PROOF COLLECTING.

The Shreves catalog of the first Roger Brody collection in 2002 stated that three complete sets of large die proofs are known, as well as one part set, which was divided up and offered individually in that sale. This set was unknown when the Brody sale was held. It was given by Bureau of Engraving and Printing director, William M. Meredith, to the Stamp Division superintendent, Major James H. Reeve, a Civil War veteran (who lost a leg in battle), as a token of appreciation for his service. He also received a Roosevelt Small Die Proof Presentation Album. This set remained with Reeve's ancestors from the first decade of the 20th century until 2018 when it was offered in Siegel sale 1192

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL COMPLETE SET OF ROOSEVELT ALBUM SMALL DIE PROOFS FOR THE 1904 LOUISIANA PURCHASE ISSUE. THIS ISSUE IS MUCH RARER THAN ROOSEVELT PROOFS FOR THE EARLIER ISSUES.

In 1903, 85 Roosevelt presentation albums were prepared. The Louisiana Purchase Issue was not released until 1904 and so was not included in the initial album production. Several years after the albums were produced, ten were updated with stamp issues that came after 1903. Therefore, Roosevelt proofs of post-1903 issues are more than eight times rarer than proofs of the earlier issues. A Power Search review reveals that this is only the second complete set we have offered since our 1978 Rarities of the World sale. Scott Catalogue values are out of date as the only other set we sold realized double Scott in 2012 -- catalogue value remains the same today.

With 2015 A.P.S. certificates mentioning hinge remnants, which are irrelevant for proofs issued without gum
