Affixed to small piece and cancelled by Buffalo N.Y. patent killer, clear rows of overlapping rings, the so-called "Bedspring" safety network overprint, horizontal crease slightly breaks the paper

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE "BEDSPRING" SAFETY NETWORK OVERPRINT, ATTRIBUTED TO EMANUEL HARMON, ON THE 3-CENT 1861 ISSUE WITH BUFFALO NEW YORK PATENT CANCEL.

The safety network overprint essays listed in Scott as 79-E26 are discussed in two important articles by James Lee, Richard Drews and Jan Hofmeyr in the 2016 and 2017 Chronicle (no. 251, pp. 260-274 and no. 253, pp. 64-72). Both Abram Gibson and Emanuel Harmon received patents for re-use prevention ideas based on overprinting intaglio engraved stamps with surface printed networks of light wavy lines in various colors. Either the intaglio ink or network ink would be fugitive and wiped away if an attempt was made to re-use the stamp. The essay offered here conforms to the Harmon patent and is so attributed in the first Chronicle article. We are aware of only one other example with this Buffalo patent cancel. An example with a Washington D.C. cancel is also known (see Siegel Sale 890, lot 263).

VERY FINE. A RARE 10-CENT 1869 ESSAY WITH THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE VIGNETTE ENGRAVED BY JAMES SMILLIE, WHICH WAS ULTIMATELY USED FOR THE 24-CENT DENOMINATION.

This vignette is a miniature engraving by James Smillie, based on a painting by Trumbull which hangs in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. Contrary to popular belief, the scene depicted by Trumbull is not the signing ceremony, but the presentation of the draft. It has been written that the 30c stamp was changed from the Surrender of Burgoyne to the Eagle, Shield and Flags design to avoid offending the British. If true, it seems odd that officials would choose to use the Declaration of Independence "1776" design for the 24c stamp, which was far more likely to adorn mail to England (the basic rate was 12c).

VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL SET OF 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE INVERT PLATE PROOFS. ONLY ONE SHEET OF 100 OF EACH WAS PRODUCED.

The card proof sheets of 100 of the four inverted high values of the 1869 Pictorial issue were prepared for and displayed at the Atlanta International Cotton Exposition in 1881. They were printed in response to the publicity surrounding the actual inverted stamps that began to appear in the 1870s. The sheets were somehow acquired by James A. Petrie of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, at the close of the exposition. Petrie claimed that he rescued the inverts along with the trial color card proof sheets (the Atlanta trial color proofs) just before they were to be burned. For some years he tried to sell his find and in 1895 he began to advertise them in the philatelic press, finding no takers. In 1903 he sold them to James Ludovic Lindsay, the 26th Earl of Crawford, one of the great collectors of stamps, essays, proofs and philatelic literature at the turn of the 20th Century. In November 1915 the Earl of Crawford's collection was purchased by John A. Klemann of the Nassau Stamp Company in New York. It was Klemann who eventually cut up the sheets.
