Sale 1247, Lot 617, 1917-19 Issues (Scott 481-524)$1.00 Deep Brown (518b). Lightly hinged, deep rich color on bright paper, choice centering with wide margins

VERY FINE AND CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE $1.00 1917 ISSUE IN THE DEEP BROWN COLOR.

According to Johl, a small number of stamps were printed in this distinctive shade early in the issue of the 1917 $1.00 stamp. During the course of the six years that the stamp was issued, all other printings were made in the normal shade. Centered examples such as the stamp offered here are true condition rarities.

Ex Drucker. With 1984, 2002 P.F. and 2014 P.S.E. certificates (OGph, VF 80; SMQ $2,900.00)

Sale 1247, Lot 618, 1917-19 Issues (Scott 481-524)2c Carmine (519). Barest trace of what may be hinging, brilliant color, perfectly centered with unusually balanced margins for this difficult issue

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT WASHINGTON, SCOTT 519, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E.

With 2004 P.S.E. certificate (OGph, Superb 98; SMQ $1,500.00). This is the highest grade awarded in any gum category and one of four to achieve it. A Mint N.H. example with this grade realized $6,000 hammer in a recent auction, and this is a wonderfully affordable alternative.
