VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A BEAUTIFUL SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1875 CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.

Our census of Scott 172 contains 38 examples. Most are scissors-separated into the perforations on at least one side. Of the eleven copies with full perforations, most have either pulled perforations or are not centered, limiting their desirability. The example offered here, with intact perforations on all sides and in sound condition, is very desirable.

Our census of Scott 174 contains 40 examples, including one in the Miller collection owned by The New York Public Library, leaving 39 available to collectors. Of these, an overwhelming majority have the perforations scissors-separated on at least one side. Only five or six have intact perforations, and of those perhaps half are faulty. This sound and centered example with intact perforations is a true condition rarity and one of the finest extant.

VERY FINE. A LOVELY EXAMPLE OF 30-CENT 1875 CONTINENTAL SPECIAL PRINTING -- ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT OF THE HARD PAPER SPECIAL PRINTINGS TO OBTAIN IN CHOICE CONDITION.

Many examples of the Continental Bank Note Special Printings were separated by scissors, and so are often found with perforations partly missing or entirely trimmed away. A review of our records and those of The Philatelic Foundation found 52 certified copies. Of these, fewer than ten have perforations on all four sides, including the stamp offered here.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE 1875 5-CENT CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING ON HARD PAPER. THIS IS THE RAREST OF ALL SPECIAL PRINTINGS AND ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL UNITED STATES STAMPS. ONLY TEN EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS, INCLUDING ONE IN THE MILLER COLLECTION AT THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY.

Our census of Scott 181, available at our website at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/181 , contains only ten examples, including one in the Miller collection owned by The New York Public Library (number 10), leaving nine available to collectors. One (number 8) was certified in 1952 and needs to be reexamined for condition and identification. Another (number 6) has a confirmed fault. Two have perforations touching the design at bottom (numbers 1 and 5). One other has perforations partly scissors-separated but intact (number 3). This leaves only four sound and well-centered examples available to collectors with intact perforations: numbers 2, 4 (the stamp offered here), 7 and 9. This offering is a significant opportunity to add one of the rarest stamps in U.S. philately without compromising on condition.
