1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Position 97L4 with curl on shoulder, unused (no gum), deep rich color, centered to bottomVERY GOOD. A RARE SOUND UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE Ia.
Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4. There are only a handful of unused examples known in sound condition.

1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Position 94L4, brilliant color on crisp paper, centered slightly to bottom right, light strike of circular datestamp cancelFRESH AND FINE SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia.
Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4.

1c Blue, Ty. II, Major Plate Crack (20 var). Position 13L2, rich color, non-intersecting strikes of circular datestamp leave the major crack at lower left completely visible, fresh and Fine, ex Koppersmith, with 1989 P.F. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. II, Major Plate Crack (20 var). Block of 17 containing Positions 3-5/12-15/21-25/31-35L2, plus Position 2L2 hinged in place at top left (original gum), block is unused (no gum), with part imprint selvage at left, showing all positions of the plate crack, rich color, detailed impression which clearly shows the plate flaw, few perf separations sensibly reinforced, couple faults including one stamp at right with perf flaws, Position 21 surface scrape, light crease at top right and tiny thin specks, Position 2L2 lightly tonedFINE APPEARANCE. THE ONLY RECORDED UNUSED BLOCK OF THE 1857 PERFORATED ONE-CENT SHOWING THE “BIG CRACK” IN PLATE 2. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PERFORATED ONE-CENT MULTIPLES IN EXISTENCE. A MAGNIFICENT SHOWPIECE.
The fracture on Plate 2 began above Position 2 on the left pane and continued downward in a “lightning bolt” jagged line across Positions 12-13L, 23L and at a later stage just into 33L (as seen in this block). It was probably caused by an inherent flaw created during the manufacture of the steel plate.
Regarding this block, Ashbrook wrote (personal letter to Neinken): “It is not only very rare but so far as I am aware it is unique... In all my years with the One-Cent I never even heard of a block of four which included any of the Plate 2 crack positions.” It is also described and illustrated by Morris Fortgang in his article “The One Cent Stamp of 1857: Types–Varieties–Rarities” (1957 Congress Book, p. 126) and by Neinken in his book (p. 196).

With 2017 P.S.E. certificate (OGh, XF 90; SMQ $4,250.00). Only one grades higher (at 95) and six others share this grade.

1c Blue, Ty. IV (23). Recut once at top, unused (no gum), radiant color, small natural inclusion on Franklin's head, Fine, with 1980 P.F. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. IV (23). Recut once at top, unused (no gum), bright color and well-centered for this tightly spaced issue, a couple of tiny thin specks and a short perf, still appears Very Fine, signed in pencil by Sloane in 1928
1c Blue, Ty. IV (23). Recut twice at bottom (only 11 such recuts on the plate), choice centering and margins showing the complete design characteristics, blue 1859 circular datestamp cancel, Extremely Fine, a beautiful stamp, with 2004 P.F. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. IV, Triple Transfer, One Inverted (23 var). Position 91L1L, recut once at top, rich color, light circular datestamp cancel, fresh and Fine, this variety is a great rarity as a perforated stamp, we have not offered another example since our 2011 sale of the Wagshal collection which had two -- both inferior to the example offered here, with 1995 P.F. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. Va (24 var). Mint N.H., beautiful color, fresh and Fine, with 2011 P.F. certificate, Scott value as hinged
1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Block of eight with bottom selvage, original gum, a couple stamps in bottom row Mint N.H. and a few others not hinged but some slight offset from adherence to another sheet causes tiny gum disturbances and small thin spots on top left stamp, rich color, small gum stain in perfs between positions 2/6, overall Fine-Very Fine and attractive block, Scott value as two blocks of four
