Sale Number 1216, Lot Number 116, 1c 1857 Perforated Issue: Plates 7-101c Blue, Ty. V (24), 1c Blue, Ty. V (24)1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Positions 31-32/41-42/51-52/61-62L8, block of eight from the left pane of Plate 8 with “Toppan, Carpenter & Co. BANK NOTE ENGRAVERS. Phila. New York, Boston & Cincinnati” imprint and “No. 8 P.” plate number, unused (no gum), bright color, few expertly rejoined perf separations, few light creases are barely noticeable

FINE-VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY REPORTED COMPLETE PLATE BLOCK FROM THE LEFT PANE OF PLATE 8. THIS IMPRINT IS ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE AS IT SHOWS THE “R” SLIGHTLY DOUBLED AND THE “&” TRANSFERRED OVER ANOTHER LETTER.

On the left pane of Plate 8, the “r” of “Carpenter” is doubled and the “&” was transferred over the “C” of “Co.” This does not occur on the right pane. On the left pane, the imprint is also only 1.75 mm away from the designs, so the plate block offered here, with wide margin showing the full imprint not affected by the perfs, is a remarkable item. It is also the only recorded intact plate block from the left pane of Plate 8.

A detail of this plate block is illustrated in the Neinken book (p. 397). Ex Neinken and Wagshal
