The last printing of the New York provisional was furnished on January 7, 1847, when 100 sheets were delivered. Philip T. Wall believes that most of the stamps on Gray paper (Scott 9X3) and Blue paper (Scott 9X2) come from this last printing.

FINE APPEARANCE. THE ONLY RECORDED USE OF THE NEW YORK POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON A COVER TO PUERTO RICO.

San Juan (St. John's) was the capital of Spanish Puerto Rico. Mail between Puerto Rico and the United States at this time was carried by private ships. This letter was sent to Kirkland, Chase & Co. in Baltimore, shipping agents who transported goods and mail on frequent sailing voyages to and from Puerto Rico. This letter was carried on the brig Francis Jane, which sailed from Baltimore for San Juan on September 12, 1846 ( American and Commercial Daily Advertiser, Sep. 12, 1846).
