Sale Number 1205, Lot Number 2195, IndiaINDIA, 1852, -1/2a Red, Scinde District Post (SG S3; Scott A3), INDIA, 1852, -1/2a Red, Scinde District Post (SG S3; Scott A3)INDIA, 1852, -1/2a Red, Scinde District Post (SG S3; Scott A3). Affixed to paper, strong embossing, cancelled by neat dotted diamond cancel, typical cracks and splits as always, slightly repaired and painted in

VERY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE COVETED RED "SCINDE DAWK". A KEY ITEM TO ANY CLASSIC INDIA COLLECTION.

The "Scinde Dawk" name is simply because they were used in the Sindh Province and the word "Dawk" is an anglicized spelling of the Hindustani word for "Post". The -1/2a Red Scinde Dawk was the first stamp issued in all of Asia. Because it was embossed on a wax wafer it had a tendency to crack (and often disintegrate). It was deemed unacceptable and quickly replaced with the white and blue stamps embossed on paper.

A former owner of this example was Sir Alexander Gordon Cardew (1861-1937). He served as the Acting Governor of Madras in 1919 and held various other government positions in Madras from 1885.

Ex Sir Cardew. With 1930 R.P.S. and 2019 B.P.A. certificates. Scott $40,000.00. SG £32,000
