VERY FINE AND UNUSUAL PENNY BLACK RETURNED CHURCH QUESTIONNAIRE USING TWO PENNY BLACKS. ONLY TWO COMPLETE EXAMPLES ARE THOUGHT TO EXIST.

This form was sent by Edward Stanley, Bishop of Norwich from 1837-1849. We presume both stamps were affixed by him and likely originate from the same sheet. Bishop Stanley was renowned for combating laziness and lack of discipline among clergyman, easily seen by this church questionnaire. Only two complete examples are recorded by Karl Louis.

After a review of major Great Britain collections, a block of four on cover is often missing from even the most advanced collections.
