VERY FINE AND CHOICE. MINT NEVER-HINGED GUIDE LINE PAIRS OF THE 2-CENT VERTICAL COIL, SCOTT 386, ARE EXTREMELY ELUSIVE IN THE HIGHER GRADES.
The Perf 12 coils proved to be too susceptible to falling apart in the machines used to affix (and make) the coils. They also generated complaints from postmasters and users, who found them too fragile to handle easily. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing switched to Perf 8-1/2 for their coils very shortly after issuing the Perf 12 vertical coil, Scott 386. The EDU for Scott 386 is December 9, 1910, while the issue date for the first Perf 8-1/2 coil, Scott 391, is December 12, 1910. As such, Scott 386 had a very short period of use.

With 1987 P.F. (for pair) and 2010 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98; SMQ $2,750.00). This is the highest graded example of Scott 386 in any format or gum condition, and it has not been equaled.
