Plate 3-A, Type V (Westerberg Position 5), probably a later printing, full to large margins, tied by red "POSTAGE PAID" in oval handstamp on large part of cover to "Na Lui Epikopo" at the Catholic Mission in Honolulu, carried on an inter-island schooner and cancelled on arrival at Honolulu, stamp has faint diagonal crease at bottom right

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 2-CENT BLUE NUMERAL ISSUE TIED ON COVER BY THE RED "POSTAGE PAID" OVAL.

Gregory does not report numbers of covers known for the various Numeral Issues, but various sources have reported between 10 and 25 covers with the 1859 2c Blue (all settings). Very few covers have the stamp tied by the red Honolulu datestamp or red "POSTAGE PAID" oval.

Ex Aall and Twigg-Smith. With 1988 Holcombe and 2007 P.F. certificates. Scott value for No. 13 on cover is $12,500.00.

VERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 2-CENT DARK BLUE ON GRAYISH WHITE NUMERAL ISSUE USED ON COVER.

Used on cover, the distinctive 2c Dark Blue on Grayish White (Scott 13a) is much rarer than the Light Blue on Bluish (Scott 13), but this is not reflected by Scott Catalogue value -- both catalogue $12,500.00.

FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE EXTREMELY RARE "NTER" NUMERAL ISSUE PLATE VARIETY.

As an indication of rarity, the Honolulu Advertiser collection contained only two examples of the "NTER" variety on Grayish paper (both Position 4, Plates 3-E and 3-F), while the Pietsch collection contained one stamp from Plate 3-F (later offered by us in our Twigg-Smith sale, Sale 931, realized $5,500 hammer, the stamp offered here) and an enigmatic example from Position 7 on Plate 3-E. We also offered one in our Sale 1090, which came from a pre-WWII collection and had been off the market for 70+ years.

Sale Number 1192, Lot Number 1023, Hawaii: Kamehameha III Issues thru Numerals1864, 2c Black (20 var), 1864, 2c Black (20 var)1864, 2c Black (20 var). Plate 5-Cx, Type VII (Westerberg Position 7), raised "I" of "INTER", large even margins, 9-bar square grid cancel, slight overall toning

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A VERY RARE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1864 2-CENT FIFTH-SETTING NUMERAL FROM PLATE 5-Cx, WITH THE ADDED APPEAL OF THE RAISED "I" PLATE VARIETY.

After Westerberg published his Plating the Hawaiian Numerals in 1968, he acknowledged the existence of Plate 5-Cx. As such, it does not appear in his plating diagrams. According to the Pietsch sale catalogue (Shreve), Westerberg described this stamp as "a stamp from hitherto unknown Plate 5-Cx". It has been reported that five or fewer examples are known and this is only the third example we have offered since keeping computerized records.

Ex D'Assis, Pietsch and Twigg-Smith. Scott Retail $1,500.00 as normal from Plate 5-C

Sale Number 1192, Lot Number 1024, Hawaii: Kamehameha III Issues thru Numerals1865, 5c Bluish Black, Grayish White, "Hawaiian Postage" (21b), 1865, 5c Bluish Black, Grayish White, "Hawaiian Postage" (21b)1865, 5c Bluish Black, Grayish White, "Hawaiian Postage" (21b). Plate 9-A, Type V (Westerberg Position 5), unused (no gum), large even margins, a tiny negligible thin speck shows in fluid

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE BLUISH-BLACK 5-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" NUMERAL, SCOTT 21b.

This stamp is printed on thin yellowish white wove paper, which is similar in color and texture to Scott 20 but slightly thinner. The color of the printed design is superficially black; however, when held to intense light the ink shows a hybrid mixture of blue and black, which suggests that the printer was experimenting with ink and paper colors when this stamp was printed. Whether it is a proof (no Numeral proofs are known) or an issued stamp (only one other example is known, used and defective), we cannot say.

Ex Crocker, Atherton and Honolulu Advertiser.

Sale Number 1192, Lot Number 1026, Hawaii: Kamehameha III Issues thru Numerals1865, 5c Blue on Blue, "Interisland", Tete Beche (22a), 1865, 5c Blue on Blue, "Interisland", Tete Beche (22a)1865, 5c Blue on Blue, "Interisland", Tete Beche (22a). Plate 12-A, Types VI/IV/II/III/I and I/III/II/IV/VI in a tete-beche pane of ten, (Westerberg Positions 2/4/6/8/10 for each vertical row), original gum, h.r., ample to large margins, fresh color on nicely blued paper, horizontal crease mostly in margin between stamps

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THE FINER OF THE TWO RECORDED TETE-BECHE PANES OF TEN OF THE 1865 5-CENT "INTERISLAND" NUMERAL ISSUE. AN OUTSTANDING RARITY.

Apart from the Post Office sheet of 25 offered in our Honolulu Advertiser sale, we record only two tete-beche panes of ten. The other pane, offered in the Honolulu Advertiser sale in 1995 and in our William H. Gross Sale in 2016, has similar margins with a thin speck and a few age bleach spots. This is the finer of the two.

Ex Tows and Aall. With 1999 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail as five tete-beche pairs with no premium for the full pane
