at lower left, two bold strikes of "Penny Post"
oval handstamps, stamp with pulled perf at bottom, some slight overall soiling, otherwise Very Fine, very unusual, this was the subject of an article in the Chronicle
(Jan. 2009), Wheeling was the most important city in western Virginia, in about 1860 the McLain brothers established a penny post in their drug store, they would get the mail from the main post office and distribute it to boxes, to be collected by the recipients, it was a forerunner to the idea of sub-post offices.
