Sale 1163 — The Clipper City Collection of Superb U.S. Stamps
Sale Date — Tuesday, 19 September, 2017
Category — 1875 Reprint of 1857-60 Issue (Scott 40-47)

VERY FINE AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE 24-CENT 1857 REPRINT.
The Continental Bank Note Company reprinted the 24c stamp from the original plate of 200 subjects. 10,000 were printed (50 impressions). Only 479 were sold; the remaining 9,521 were destroyed on July 23, 1884, by order of the Postmaster General. Due to the narrow spacing between subjects, many have perforations touching the design at either top or bottom. Very few have perforations clear of the design on all four sides. This is reflected in the SMQ prices for this issue as a grade of F 75 equates to Scott Retail value, rather than the usual grade of VF 80.
With 1987 P.F. and 2010 P.S.E. certificates (VF 80; SMQ $5,000.00)

Only 480 were sold; the remaining 9,520 were destroyed on July 23, 1884. Of those sold, very few have perforations clear of the design on all four sides. This is reflected in the SMQ prices for this issue as a grade of F 75 equates to Scott Retail value, rather than the usual grade of VF 80.
