EXTREMELY FINE. A VERY RARE LARGE-SIZE GEORGE T. JONES ESSAY FOR THE 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE CONTRACT COMPETITION.

Scott lists and prices these as "cut to stamp size." In addition, while the single color essay offered here is priced less than the essays with light overprint this must be rarer as this is the only example we have offered since we started keeping computerized records more than 20 years ago

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE GEORGE T. JONES ESSAY FOR THE 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE, DEPICTING ULYSSES S. GRANT.

We have offered this essay with full safety overprint and with safety overprint at bottom only, but we are aware of only one other (in a less obvious color) with the overprint missing the portrait, which was no doubt deliberate.
