Sale 1145, Lot 331, 1857-60 Issue1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Pos. 45L4, rich color and bright paper, sharp impression, light strike of town datestamp, beautifully centered with clear breaks at top and bottom

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A GORGEOUS EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT PERFORATED TYPE III STAMP, WHICH CLEARLY SHOWS THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TYPE.

Due to narrow spacing on the plate, examples of this type often have the perforations cutting into the outer lines at either top or bottom or both. The example offered here clearly presents the characteristics of the type.

Sale 1145, Lot 337, 1857-60 Issue5c Brick Red (27). Brilliant color, excellent centering, bold strike of New York Ocean Mail circular datestamp with integral grid

VERY FINE. A STRIKING EXAMPLE OF THE 1858 5-CENT BRICK RED WITH THE NEW YORK OCEAN MAIL DATESTAMP.

This distinctive cancel is normally seen on 10c stamps used to pay the transcontinental rate. Its use on a 5c stamp, especially on the desirable Brick Red shade, is remarkable.

Sale 1145, Lot 345, 1857-60 Issue24c Gray Lilac (37). Unused (regummed), P.S.E. states "removed cancel", an opinion with which we disagree -- a large supply of unused 24c 1860 stamp remainders surfaced after the Civil War and many had no gum (a stamp with a cancel removed is a rarity) -- well-centered and Very Fine, with 2016 P.F. (as unused) and 2016 P.S.E. certificates
