Sale Number 1138, Lot Number 1656, 1912-23 Issue (Scott 519-550)2c Carmine (519), 2c Carmine (519)2c Carmine (519). Mint N.H., perfect centering with well-proportioned margins, rich color and detailed impression

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SPECTACULAR MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF SCOTT 519, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.

This stamp was created in 1917 when a small excess supply of the imperforate, double-line watermarked Scott 344 was returned by the New York City post office to the Bureau for credit. Rather than issue the credit, the Bureau perforated the sheets with the current perf 11 wheels and returned them to the New York City post office for public sale.

With 2004 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; SMQ $7,500.00). Only three others have attained this lofty grade, which is the highest awarded.

Sale Number 1138, Lot Number 1664, 1912-23 Issue (Scott 519-550)1c Green, Rotary Perf 11 x 10 (538), 1c Green, Rotary Perf 11 x 10 (538)1c Green, Rotary Perf 11 x 10 (538). Mint N.H., stunning Jumbo margins and perfect centering, rich color on bright white paper

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS SPECTACULAR MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1919 ONE-CENT PERF 11x10 COIL WASTE ISSUE, SCOTT 538, HAS BEEN AWARDED THE ULTIMATE GRADE OF GEM 100 JUMBO BY P.S.E.

While Scott 538 is a common stamp, superbly centered copies or stamps with Jumbo margins are rare and the combination of both in one stamp is extremely rare. It was put through two different perforating machines -- perforated 10 vertically on the rotary perforator during the coil part of production and then perforated 11 on the flat plate perforator. As a result, most of the stamps are off-center. The rotary press sheets also had a natural tendency to curl, making perforating on the flat plate perforator especially difficult.

Ex Merlin. With 2008 and 2011 P.S.E. certificates (Gem 100 Jumbo; unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 100, SMQ $1,800.00 as 100). This is the only stamp to achieve this perfect grade in any condition category (Mint N.H., hinged or used)

Sale Number 1138, Lot Number 1665, 1912-23 Issue (Scott 519-550)2c Carmine Rose, Ty. II, Rotary Perf 11 x 10 (539), 2c Carmine Rose, Ty. II, Rotary Perf 11 x 10 (539)2c Carmine Rose, Ty. II, Rotary Perf 11 x 10 (539). Mint N.H., rich color and sharp impression, wide balanced margins and choice centering

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE ROTARY-PRESS WASTE ISSUE. AN EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULT STAMP TO FIND IN SUCH CONDITION. THIS IS THE FINEST WE HAVE EVER OFFERED.

At the beginning or end of a coil-stamp print run from the 170-subject rotary plates, some leading or trailing paper was left over that was too short for rolling into 500-stamp rolls. In 1919, the Bureau devised a plan to salvage this waste by converting the stamps from coil stamps into sheet stamps. This was accomplished by cutting the sheets into panes and putting the panes through the flat-plate perforator in use at the time, giving the stamps perforations on all sides.

Since Scott 539 was put through two different perforating machines of differing gauges at different times, most of the stamps are off-center. The stamp offered here is a true condition rarity by virtue of its centering, margins and Mint N.H. state.

Ex "Piedmont" and "Scarsdale". With 1968, 1988, 2000 and 2007 P.F. certificates (VF-XF 85). By way of comparison, the highest grade in P.S.E.'s Population Report is 80 (one example).

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT ROTARY COIL WASTE ISSUE, SCOTT 545.

By their very nature, rotary press waste stamps are extremely difficult to obtain with such choice centering. The production process was far less precise, resulting in many off-center stamps. The stamps were not meant to be perforated on the flat-plate perforating machines, which were set for a slightly different size of stamp.

With 2011 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ $4,000.00). Only two have graded higher (one at 98 and one at 98J) and only two others share this desirable grade.

Mint N.H. with plate no. "S 30" selvage at top, rich color and detailed impression, perfectly centered with well-balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT ROTARY WASTE ISSUE, SCOTT 546, WHICH IS GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED AND ONLY ONE OTHER SHARES IT.

According to Johl (p. 228), Scott 546 was printed on a rotary press and was perforated 11 on all sides, unlike waste issues such as Scott 539, which was perforated 11 on one side and 10 on the other. Collectors and dealers at the time were generally unaware that rotary press stamps had been issued in sheet form with the same perforations as flat plate stamps, so this issue was overlooked and most were either used or destroyed.

With 2011 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; SMQ $5,250.00). This is the highest grade awarded and only one other shares this desirable grade. This is the first time we have offered this grade in one of our auctions.
