VERY FINE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE SET OF THE 1916 KIONGA SURCHARGES ON COVER.

In 1894, the Germans established an outpost south of the Rovuma River despite an agreement in 1886 with Portugal that the Rovuma was the dividing point between German East Africa and Mozambique. The Portuguese eventually seized Kionga and this was confirmed by the Treaty of Versailles at the conclusion of WWI.

A small number of covers exist with both the 1895 and 1900 Issue. They were primarily used in 1900 and 1901
