Jun. 8 9AM" circular datestamp on Executive Mansion imprint cover addressed in the hand of President Rutherford B. Hayes to Mr. W. D. Howells in Cambridge Mass. and forwarded to Newport R.I., appropriate forwarding markings including "Forwarded" in circle handstamp, some slight wear and soiling, still Very Fine, the recipient was owner of the Atlantic Monthly, this was reportedly purchased from the grandson of the person the Howells were vacationing with in Newport, the recipient left the letter there (copy of 1877 enclosure accompanies), Very Fine, Scott Retail with no premium for the Hayes handwriting

Hayes, accompanied by Executive Mansion enclosure written by Webb asking about an escutcheon he asked to have made for his father and signed "Webb C. Hayes", stamp with slight toning and slightly affected from placement near edge of cover, otherwise Very Fine and attractive, accompanied by extensive background information from the Hayes Presidential Center on the escutcheon including photographs of various designs and correspondence related to it
