Sale 1107, Lot 80, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-39)1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Deep rich Plate 4 color, extra wide margins and choice centering, virtually face-free cancel

EXTREMELY FINE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III.

Due to the narrow vertical spacing on this plate, stamps are most typically found with narrow margins and perforations impinging on one or more sides. The wide-margined example offered here is centered so that the type characteristics are clearly visible.

Ex Twigg-Smith. With 2011 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85 Jumbo; SMQ $3,500.00 as 85, $4,750.00 as 90).

Sale 1107, Lot 85, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-39)5c Brick Red (27). Radiant color, face-free strike of circular datestamp, wide and balanced margins, most recent certificate notes two tiny toned spots at top which are insignificant, still Very Fine, with 1977 P.F. and 2013 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85; SMQ $3,000.00), this would surely have graded much higher were it not for the tiny toned spots

Sale 1107, Lot 86, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-39)5c Indian Red Certified by P.F. as Bright Red Brown (28A/28b). Remarkably deep and intense shade which is, in our opinion, true Indian Red (certified as such on P.S.E. certificate), lightly cancelled, faint horizontal crease noted on P.S.E. certificate only, recent P.F. certificate erroneously identifies this as Bright Red Brown (28b) -- they got this one wrong -- and states lightly cleaned (we do not see it), Very Fine, with 2003 P.S.E. and 2015 P.F. certificates, Scott Retail as Scott 28b

Sale 1107, Lot 92, 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-39)5c Brown, Ty. II (30A). Block of four, original gum, lightly hinged, deep rich color and proof-like impression, top left stamp trivial short perf

VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 1860 5-CENT TYPE II BROWN.

The 5c Brown Type II is far rarer in unused multiples than the Orange Brown. Unlike the 1861 Orange Brown, the earlier printing in Brown was not left in Southern post offices when the issue was demonetized in August 1861. Prior to the discovery of the block of 20 in the Frelinghuysen collection, the largest recorded multiple was a block of nine. A horizontal block of six is also known (creased thru bottom three stamps) as are approximately a half-dozen blocks of four. This is certainly one of the finest of the existing blocks of any size.
