Sale Number 1114, Lot Number 34, Great Britain - King George V (by Gibbons)GREAT BRITAIN, 1915, 5sh Pale Carmine (Worn Plate), De La Rue Seahorse, Inverted Watermark (SG 410 var; Scott 174c var; SG Specialised N67(3)b), GREAT BRITAIN, 1915, 5sh Pale Carmine (Worn Plate), De La Rue Seahorse, Inverted Watermark (SG 410 var; Scott 174c var; SG Specialised N67(3)b)GREAT BRITAIN, 1915, 5sh Pale Carmine (Worn Plate), De La Rue Seahorse, Inverted Watermark (SG 410 var; Scott 174c var; SG Specialised N67(3)b). Mint N.H. with top selvage showing the inverted watermark clearly, choice centering, fresh color

EXTREMELY FINE. A PARTICULARLY HANDSOME EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 5-SHILLING PALE CARMINE WITH INVERTED WATERMARK.

The current Stanley Gibbons Concise catalogue lists several of the De La Rue Seahorses with inverted watermark. However, No. 410 is not among them, possibly because there is no recorded sale. They do list the lesser cataloguing 5sh Bright Carmine with inverted watermark and price it at £6,750. This is the basis for the catalogue value we have listed. The next Stanley Gibbons catalogue should probably list this as No. 410Wi. It is clearly a very rare variety and would make an excellent addition to an advance specialized collection of the Great Britain Seahorses.

With 1996 B.P.A. certificate. SG value as No. 409Wi
