Cut to shape (as always) and mounted on card, intense shade, Very Fine, a scarce and desirable essay, a 6c stamp was contemplated to pay the single-letter rate for distances over 3,000 miles, it appears that the 6c was changed to 1c because of the greater need for this value (see Robert Hegland's article in 1851 Sesquicentennial book for a discussion of this essay)

VERY FINE. ONE OF THREE REPORTED PROOF IMPRESSIONS FROM THE ONE-CENT 1851 ISSUE DIE (ONE IN BLUE). PROBABLY EXECUTED DURING THE PRODUCTION PHASE OF THE 1875 REPRINT AND DISTRIBUTED CIRCA 1910.

This die impression shows the so-called cancellation dot in the oval at left, which was applied to the die in 1860 and reproduced on all subjects in Plates 11 and 12. It also shows two small dots below "C" of "Cents" and a strong horizontal layout line at upper left, which are not found on Plates 1 through 12, but are found on the 1875 Reprint plate, which led Neinken to opine that this impression and the few others like it were pulled from a die prepared for the 1875 Reprint (see Neinken, page 19).

The unique example in Blue was sold in our 2012 sale of the Merlin Collection (Siegel Sale 1034, lot 30, realized $4,250 hammer). The only other example in Black was offered in our Wagshal sale (Siegel Sale 994, lot 602, realized $3,750 hammer).

Stamp size and affixed to card, clearly engraved horizontal and vertical background lines of vignette, crosses in diamonds (as in issued No. 17, but not issued Nos. 10-11) and line between "N" and "T" of "Cents", also horizontal lines in oval around vignette, small piece out at bottom right

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS ESSAY IS PROBABLY UNIQUE IN BLACK.

The Brazer catalogue illustrates an identical 3c essay that also has a small piece missing from the design at lower right and appears to be the same impression. If they are, in fact, the same, this is the unique listing example.

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND IMPORTANT CLASSIC UNITED STATES ESSAY.

The tessellated work in the frames of this essay is nearly identical to that of the 3c 1851 as issued (crosses in diamonds here are not seen on the issued 3c), as well as the 12c 1851 and Franklin carrier. Undoubtedly this rare impression is a working essay of the final design. One other example is known, with the vignette present in the right frame (Scott 11-E19), which accompanied this example in the Brazer and Piller collections. This is one of the most important production essays of the 1851 Issue and of all U.S. classical philately.

Ex Chase, Brazer, Joyce and Piller. Scott Retail has not changed in many years and is woefully out of date

E. Ralph, J. M. Bartels" on back

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE PROGRESSIVE DIE PROOF OF AN EARLY STATE OF THE FRAME USED FOR THE 24-CENT DENOMINATION OF THE 1857 ISSUE, STRUCK ALONGSIDE THE COMPLETE DESIGN AT TOP.

We have encountered two other examples of the frame-only progressive die proof (from our Lake Shore and Hulme sales), but neither contained the complete design trial color proof as this example does. Joseph E. Ralph of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is known to have distributed similar die proofs of varying denominations in 1910.

Listed in Scott with a footnote about the dual proof, but unpriced
