Horizontal pair of the 25c and single of the 1fr, large margins to just in on one side of each, tied on wonderfully fresh and clean 1852 folded cover and tied on arrival in Paris by French roller grill cancel, with "Grand-Bourg Mie. Gte., Guadeloupe, 27 Dec 1852" double-cirlce datestamp, sent via British packet with manuscript "Voie Anglaise" directive at top, Basse-Terre Dec. 31 and Calais Jan. 20 transit markings, Paris arrival backstamp, horizontal file fold thru stamps

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED COVER USING FRENCH STAMPS FROM GRAND BOURG IN GUADELOUPE. A SUPERBLY RARE AND ATTRACTIVE COVER IN ALL RESPECTS.

The rarity of this cover is better understood in the context of where it originated. Grand Bourg is a commune on the small island of Marie-Galante off the coast of the main islands of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre. Even today, Grand Bourg has a population of under 6,000 inhabitants with only two hotels. One can only imagine how small of a village it would have been in 1852.

Ex Grabowski. With 2002 Roumet certificate. Yvert value
