Sale Number 1043, Lot Number 2082, Postmasters` Provisionals, Petersburg Va. thru Tellico Plains Tenn.Petersburg Va., 5c Red (65X1), Petersburg Va., 5c Red (65X1)Petersburg Va., 5c Red (65X1). Position 10, late state showing the shifted upper right ornaments, large bottom right corner sheet margins, full to clear other sides, used with General Issue 5c Green, Stone 1-2 (1), large piece from left edge to center of stamp cut out and replaced with portion of another stamp, tied together by blue "Petersburg Va. Feb. 10" (1862) circular datestamp on piece of cover

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE CONJUNCTIVE USE OF A CONFEDERATE POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL AND THE FIRST GENERAL ISSUE.

We record a total of only eight full covers with combinations of Confederate provisionals (either adhesive or handstamped) and General Issue stamps to prepay postage. Of those, only two are known with the Petersburg stamp. The census of Petersburg covers and pieces published in the Calhoun book lists only this piece used with a general issue stamp in addition to the two covers. This is an attractive and affordable way to show the conjunctive use.

With 2006 P.F. (before the 5c Green repair) and 2012 C.S.A. certificates

Setting B with comma after "Johnson", unused (no gum), huge margins three sides to ample at bottom, paper with clear laid lines

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A BEAUTIFUL LARGE MARGINED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT TELLICO PLAINS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL.

The Rheatown and Tellico Plains provisionals were printed by the same printer, using a typeset form of three subjects. For the Tellico Plains provisional, which probably followed the Rheatown, the post office and postmaster's names were changed, and the third subject at right was reset with a 10c denomination. Only two are known used, including one on cover (both are December 1861 dates).
