EXTREMELY FINE. A MAGNIFICENT ENTIRE OF THE RARE 2-CENT BROWN RED ON ORANGE CENTENNIAL SPECIAL PRINTING. ONLY THREE FULL ENTIRES ARE KNOWN.

Reproductions of the Plimpton Manufacturing Company stamped envelope issues were specially made for display at the 1876 Centennial Exposition. They were made from new dies with extreme care and show fine impressions and clearer ink than the regular issues. None are known used. The die produced for the U140A Special Printing shows a distinctly more rounded nose on the Jackson portrait than on the die used for regular printings. The 2012 UPSS catalogue records a total of only three mint entires of this issue between the two sizes (one size 7, two size 10).

EXTREMELY FINE. THE 2-CENT VERMILION ON ORANGE IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL POSTAL STATIONERY ISSUES. NO ENTIRES ARE RECORED AND THIS IS ONE OF ONLY THREE KNOWN CUT SQUARES. ONE OF THE KEYS TO A COMPLETE COLLECTION OF THESE ISSUES.

This issue was in the past combined with the Brown Red on Orange issue (U140A), offered in the previous lot. Viewing them side-by-side, the colors are unmistakably distinct from each other. As an indication of rarity, none was offered in the Todd, Summers, Floyd, Wampler, Saddleback or Schiller Collections. The 2012 UPSS catalogue records no entires and two cut squares (one with a heavy crease), but the editors were not aware of the example subsequently sold in our Sale 1037, which had been closely held for decades.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE ENTIRE OF THE 1881 2-CENT VERMILION ON AMBER. ONE OF THE GREATEST RARITIES OF POSTAL STATIONERY COLLECTING AND A KEY TO A COMPLETE COLLECTION.

According to Envelope World (Nov.-Dec. 1957, p. 22), this entire was discovered in 1940 in a dealer's shoe box of 5c covers by John Meurer. Until that point it was not believed to exist as an entire. It passed into the Barkhausen collection and was the only item pictured on the front of the 1955 sale catalogue of the collection. The 2012 UPSS catalogue records only this entire, one unused and two used cut squares.
