Sale 997, Lot 6365, The Falberg Collection of Postal Cards (UX1-UX9)1c Brown, Postal Card (UX1; USPCC S1). Cancelled by brownish-black "Washington D.C. May 13" First Day Postmark with matching segmented cork, note on card reads "This is the first card sold in Washington D.C. May 13th 1873 6/5 P.M. I certify the above to be correct W.J. Turpin Supt. City P.O. D.C."

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE "FIRST" FIRST DAY OF THIS POSTAL CARD USED FROM WASHINGTON D.C. A GREAT RARITY.

A total of eight cards are known to exist cancelled on May 13, in Boston, New York and Washington D.C. One is known cancelled on May 12 in Springfield Mass. (sent by an official of the Morgan Envelope Co.) but has never reached the market.

Mint card, the USPCC does not recognize these as error cards even though the printing of the design is 100% genuine, it seems the salmon pink stock was used as a counting marker for counting finished piles of 500 printed sheets, obviously some found their way into the hands of collectors, rare and attractive variety, footnoted in 2010 USPCC on p. 9
