Sale 997 — United States Stamps
Sale Date — Tuesday-Friday, 26-29 October, 2010
Category — 3c-5c 1857-60 Issue (Scott 25-30A)
VERY FINE FOR THIS EXTREMELY RARE USED MULTIPLE OF THE PERFORATED 3-CENT TYPE I 1857 ISSUE.
Until Toppan Carpenter made new 3c plates with wider spaces between stamps to accommodate the perforations, they simply perforated sheets printed from the earlier Type I plates, beginning in early 1857. As this rare used block demonstrates, the narrow (and irregular) spacing was not well-suited for applying perforations.
With 2006 P.F. certificate
FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT RED BROWN.
According to Power Search, this is the sixth unused (no gum) example of the 1857 5c Red Brown we have offered (the last was sold in 2005). All have similar centering to this stamp, and three of the six have faults.
With 2010 P.F. certificate
VERY FINE. A SCARCE VERTICAL STRIP OF THREE OF THE 1857 5-CENT RED BROWN.
Accompanied by small piece on which this originated. With 1990 P.F. and 1991 P.S.E. certificates
EXTREMELY FINE. A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 5-CENT TYPE II ORANGE BROWN. RARE IN WELL-CENTERED AND SOUND USED CONDITION.
The Orange Brown was issued just before the 1857-61 Issue was demonetized, and thus is very scarce in used condition.
Ex Dauer. With 1997 P.S.E. and 1997 and 2004 P.F. certificates.
