Sale 978, Lot 1037, 1870-88 Bank Note Issues7c Vermilion, Grill (138). I. Grill, brilliant color as fresh as the day it was printed, cancelled by bold strike of New York Foreign Mail Geometric, perfectly centered with wide margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 7-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE WITH THE DESIRABLE I GRILL. THIS STAMP HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE.

The I Grill is slightly smaller in size than the H Grill and is more difficult to find, especially on the higher denominations. We started keeping track of the different grill types approximately seven years ago, and this is only the fifth we have offered for the 7c in any condition. If Scott Catalogue were consistent, they would list the I Grill separately, as they do for the 1867-68 Grilled Issues.

P.S.E. encapsulated (Superb 98; SMQ $7,850.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and only one other shares this grade. SMQ and the Population Report do not differentiate between the two grill types, but the other example to achieve this grade is an H Grill, and it realized $9,500 hammer in our recent Sale 976.

Sale 978, Lot 1042, 1870-88 Bank Note Issues10c Brown, With Secret Mark (188). Mint N.H., deep rich color and proof-like impression, unusually choice centering with wide and balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1879 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE WITH SECRET MARK. THIS STUNNING STAMP HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE.

Unlike other values of the 1879 Issue, there are virtually no 10c stamps in Mint Never-Hinged condition. A thorough review of auction catalogues, including sales of the Caspary, Close, Sinkler, Col. Green, Lilly, Braus, Wunderlich and Klein collections, among others, produced no Mint N.H. singles and no blocks containing Mint N.H. stamps. Using Power Search, we located a block of six with three Mint N.H. stamps and three other unduplicated copies. We doubt that more than a half-dozen or so Mint N.H. copies exist in total.

P.S.E. encapsulated (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $33,500.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date. Curiously, only two Mint N.H. have been graded, and both were graded equally.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1879 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE. THIS MAGNIFICENT STAMP HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E.

This issue is often found in Mint N.H. condition, as several sheets have been broken in the past ten years. However, most of the stamps in these sheets are somewhat off-center, and examples such as this are very rare.

P.S.E. encapsulated (Superb 98; SMQ $8,400.00). Only one has graded higher to date (at 100, offered in our Whitman sale), and only two others share this grade. None have been awarded this grade since we last offered this 98 in November 2007.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLES OF THE 1887 3-CENT VERMILION AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE. THIS HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF SUPERB 98 JUMBO BY P.S.E., AND IT IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE, WHICH IS THE HIGHEST AWARDED TO DATE.

The 3c Vermilion can be found with wide margins, but rarely with wide margins and precise centering. This corner-margin example in Mint N.H. condition -- perfectly centered within enormous balanced margins -- is destined to become Number 1 in any condition census of Scott 214.

Ex Morris and Westchester. With 1991 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo; unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $4,800.00 as 98). This is the highest grade awarded to date and the only example to achieve this grade.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MAGNIFICENT MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1888 5-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE. THIS REMARKABLE STAMP HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE.

The 5c Garfield was first issued in 1882 in shades of Brown. When the colors were changed in 1888, the 5c was released in a beautiful Indigo shade. Although unused copies are by no means scarce, Mint N.H. examples are very scarce, and higher grades in Mint N.H. condition are exceedingly rare. For the collector assembling a Superb Mint N.H. set of the 1888 American Bank Note Issue, the stamp offered here is a key component.
