Sale Number 969, Lot Number 1176, Philippines (220-225)1901, 4c Orange Brown (220), 1901, 4c Orange Brown (220)1901, 4c Orange Brown (220). Top imprint and plate no. 790 block of six, slight tropical original gum, exceptionally well-centered, Very Fine-Extremely Fine, with copy of 1982 letter from Joe Napp, recognized authority on Philippines overprints wherein he states "You have a Philippines #220 4c with a plate number #790. This number is apparently unique.", he goes on talking about spacing and says "If the spacing is different---then you have a Special Overprinting as only one printing was made of the 4c." The 4c is not listed among the Special Printings in the catalog, plus we feel fairly confident that all of the surviving Special Printings have normal original gum because of where they were prepared rather than having been exposed to the tropical conditions in Philippine post offices, an interesting item in unusually nice condition

Sale Number 969, Lot Number 1186, Philippines (220-225)1901, $1.00 Black Ty. I-II Combination (223-223A), 1901, $1.00 Black Ty. I-II Combination (223-223A)1901, $1.00 Black Ty. I-II Combination (223-223A). Bottom imprint and plate no. 76 strip of three, right stamps Type II, left stamp Type I, part disturbed original gum, intense shade and impression, tiny thin speck, few trivial separations expertly reinforced

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE COMBINATION IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER STRIP OF THREE COMBINING TYPE I AND II. A GREAT RARITY OF THE ISSUE, WHICH DOES NOT EXIST AS A FULL PLATE BLOCK.

The $1.00 1894-95 plate -- comprising 200 subjects arranged in two panes of 100 -- included five vertical columns of Type II (50 subjects). The left half of one pane was made up of Type I stamps, and the right half of the same pane comprised Type II stamps. The other pane was entirely Type I. Therefore, where the imprint and plate number appears at top and bottom, the two stamps at right are Type II, and the one stamp at left is Type I. Combination pairs and strips, which exist only between fifth and sixth columns, are extremely rare and desirable. Plate number strips and blocks are of even greater rarity. When one factors in the Philippines overprint, the rarity increases exponentially.

Ex Todd. Scott Catalogue lists but does not price this as a plate block of six. We sent an inquiry to the editor of Scott Catalogue, James E. Kloetzel, who told us that it was listed in the first edition to price Philippines plate blocks (1937) and that it has had a dash ever since. They have no evidence that one exists and it will likely be delisted in a few years.
