Sale Date — Tuesday-Friday, 22-25 September, 2009
Category — 1902-08 Issue (Scott 319-322)

EXTREMELY FINE. A WONDERFULLY CHOICE PAIR OF THE 1903 2-CENT SHIELD ISSUE IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF THIS ISSUE.
According to Johl, a block of 25, imperforate horizontally, was found at the Washington D.C. post office. Eight were used for postage, leaving two blocks of four, a strip of three and a pair.
This error differs from the more famous so-called "San Francisco roulette", where a small quantity of sheets was found imperforate between the top two rows only and was rouletted locally.
Both blocks of No. 319d were offered in past Siegel sales: one in 2000 (Blumenkopf collection, now offered in this sale) and the other in 2002 (Drucker collection).
With 1999 P.S.E. certificate

FINE-VERY FINE. THE UNIQUE STRIP OF THREE OF THE 1903 2-CENT SHIELD ISSUE IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY.
According to Johl, a block of 25, imperforate horizontally, was found at the Washington D.C. post office. Eight were used for postage, leaving two blocks of four, a strip of three and a pair. The strip of three is especially desirable as it is the largest vertical multiple.
This error differs from the more famous so-called "San Francisco roulette", where a small quantity of sheets was found imperforate between the top two rows only and was rouletted locally.
With 1950 and 2003 P.F. certificates

This error differs from the more famous so-called "San Francisco roulette", where a small quantity of sheets was found imperforate between the top two rows only and was rouletted locally.
