Sawtooth Perforations (11 var)3c Brownish Carmine, Ty. I, Bergen N.Y. Sawtooth Perforations (11 var). Position 45R6, sawtooth perforations on three sides, s.e. at top, tied by "Bergen N.Y. Dec. 1" circular datestamp on yellow cover to Monteray Mass., barely reduced at right, some slight wear incl. few cover toned spots at top right

VERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE BERGEN NEW YORK SAWTOOTH PERFORATION ON COVER. ONLY NINE EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED IN THE HULME CENSUS, OF WHICH FIVE ARE ON COVER.

In the Sesquicentennial book, Wilson Hulme opines that these were created in either 1856 or 1857, and he reproduces an account from a later postmaster of Bergen, who had noted "About 1856, a shoemaker was postmaster of Bergen. Sheets of stamps then were not perforated and had to be cut apart with shears. He took the little wheel with a handle that cobblers and dressmakers used to make patterns, placed a stick across a sheet of stamps and drew his tool across, thus providing the first perforated stamp sheets." Five are known on cover.

FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE SAWTOOTH PERFORATION FROM HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT. A GREAT RARITY AND EXHIBITION ITEM.

In Wilson Hulme's Sesquicentennial book article, he notes the Hartford sawtooth perforation in his introduction, but since this example is unique, he could not offer any additional information pertaining to its manufacture. It was likely made using a dressmaker or pattern maker's wheel, which was used to create some of the other unofficial perforations.

EXTREMELY FINE. ONLY TWO EXAMPLES OF THIS SAWTOOTH PERFORATION ARE RECORDED BY WILSON HULME IN HIS CENSUS -- BOTH ARE ON COVER. ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL PRIVATE PERFORATIONS ON THIS ISSUE, AND ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE IN SUCH IMMACULATE CONDITION AND WITH THE CORNER CARD.

In his Sesquicentennial book article, Wilson Hulme records two covers with the sawtooth perforation used from Kensington, a suburb of Philadelphia. Both are from the same sender to the same recipient. Additionally, he records two stamps used from Philadelphia, which show the same perforations as the two from Kensington, and which may have originated from the same creator.
