Sale 895, Lot 238, 1870-88 Bank Note Issues (Scott 135 to 144)10c Brown, Double Grill (139 var). H. Grill, original gum, lightly hinged, two distinct grill impressions, deep rich color and detailed impression, exceptionally well-centered with extra wide margins at top and bottom

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. PROBABLY THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1870 NATIONAL GRILLED ISSUE IN SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION WITH DOUBLE GRILL.

The double grill is listed but not priced in unused condition. The Scott Retail value for a used stamp with double grill is $1,200 compared with $650 for a used stamp with one grill (185%). Using this ratio, the unused stamp with double grill should be approximately $9,250. When the superb condition is factored into the equation, the current market value becomes much higher.

With 2002 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail as normal

Sale 895, Lot 243, 1870-88 Bank Note Issues (Scott 135 to 144)24c Purple, Grill, Points Up (142 var). H. Grill, clear grill pints visible from the front of the stamp, well-struck segmented cork cancel

FRESH AND FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 24-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE WITH POINTS UP WE HAVE EVER OFFERED. A GREAT RARITY OF THE ISSUE.

The points-up variety is caused when the sheet of stamps is fed into the grilling machine upside down. It can also be caused by a foldover somewhere in the sheet, but that is likely not the case here due to the grill's orientation.

With 1974, 1987 and 2005 P.F. certificate, the latter mentioning the points up variety. Scott Retail as normal
