VERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED COVER FROM YANCE'S FERRY TO CHARLESTON WITH A STAMP USED TO PREPAY THE CARRIER'S DELIVERY FEE. THIS IS ALSO THE ONLY RECORDED USE OF THE HONOUR'S "CENS" ERROR ON A COVER POSTED OUTSIDE CHARLESTON.
In the Golden sale catalogue (lot 234), we detailed our record of three covers to Charleston with carrier stamps accepted as prepayment. The cover offered here is a fourth example, and is the only one mailed at Yance's Ferry S.C. and the only one with the "Cens" error. The other three covers are: 2) Honour's 4LB13 from Aiken S.C., Siegel Sale 773 (realized $3,750); 3) Honour's 4LB8 from Clarksville Ga., ex Golden (realized $3,000), and 4) Kingman's 4LB15 name-erased variety from Raleigh N.C., ex Golden (realized $3,000).
Ex Mason and Hall.
VERY FINE. APPROXIMATELY TWELVE TO FIFTEEN EXAMPLES OF THE BLACK LITHOGRAPHED CARRIER STAMP ARE REPORTED, AND ONLY THREE ARE KNOWN IN COMBINATION WITH THE 1851 ISSUE.
