VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL USAGE FRANKED TO PAY DOUBLE THE OBSOLETE 34-CENT RATE PERU. FROM THE DAVIS CORRESPONDENCE.
The 34c rate via American Packet, then by British Mails via Panama, was in effect from November 1867 thru March of 1870, when the rate was changed to 22c. This cover was sent just as the rate changed, and the sender was apparently unaware of the new rate, which would have been 44c for this double-weight cover.
